 “Interior” (2021-ongoing)

This collection of photographs is part of an ongoing project. As a photographer, I try to balance between being an observer of individuals and seamlessly engross myself within the image. I choose to photograph subjects who I personally know as my portraits should feel as though they can be in both a gallery and a living room. Inspired by American photographer Tina Barney, these portraits teeter a line between stylised tableaus and instantaneous images, which makes them simultaneously complex and full of ease. I continue to be interested in finding the space between staged tableaux that create such a specific scene and feeling, and an organic quality that makes the photograph seem as if it is coming from a family album. There is a vulnerability and intimate nature of photographing subjects familiar to me and these portraits try to capture their inner lives as individuals. I explore familial relationships through photographing brothers and notions of home. I tend to draw upon my self-awareness of privilege, wealth, superficial beauty, and growing up in New England in the 2000s and try to play with irony and mockery, whilst also embracing it. Self-awareness, as an artist, is what makes the work dynamic and goes beyond just capturing surface aesthetic, but the interior emotions, thoughts, and life of my subjects.
